Alphabet Preschool Activities
Alphabet preschool activities help toddlers and preschool children learn the letters of the alphabet. There are many fun and interesting ways to present the letters and the letter sounds. It is important to vary the ways in which the alphabet letters are taught so that children can understand how letters fit into our world.
Children will first become familiar with the image of the letter. Using pictures of the letter itself, flash cards, or printables is great way to familiarize children with uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
Next, using different alphabet activities, you will want to teach children the sounds that the letters make. It is useful to have examples of words that start with each letter. Some letters make more than 1 sound such as a (acorn v. apple), i (ice vs. igloo), and g (girl vs. giraffe). Of course, there are other letters that make sounds according to certain rules, but for toddlers and preschool children, just stick to the basics.
Once the basic letters are mastered, you may want to present the concept of blends (bl, br, cl, cr, pr, st), diagraphs (ai, ie, ch, gh), and diphthongs (oo, ow, aw). These concepts are typically taught in Kindergarten; however, since children develop their skills at various rates, it is possible that some preschool children will be ready for these concepts.
Learning the letters and letter sounds is a precursor to reading development. To help encourage this process, I have provided Alphabet preschool activities for each letter. There are art, science, social studies, math, reading, and snack ideas along with some printable worksheets. Have fun working with your child.
