California Child Care
Licensing Information
The California Child Care Licensing Program is responsible for licensing and monitoring Family Child Care Homes and California Child Care Centers. A child care license is required if care is provided to children from more than one family and are not related to the provider. A California child care license is NOT required if care is provided for only one family or for a relative.
There are two types of Family Child Care Homes, small and large. Small Family Child Care Homes are California child care licensed homes providing care to no more than 8 children. Large Family Child Care Homes are California child care licensed homes providing care to no more than 14 children. A California Child Care Center is a California child care licensed child care business that provides care to children in a group setting usually in a commercial building.
California child care law dictates that providers of Family Child Care Homes and California Child Care Centers MUST have a California child care license. If a provider is caught operating without a license, it is a misdemeanor. Therefore, unlicensed providers are subject to criminal charges and a fine of $200 per day.
