Connecticut Child Care State Contacts

If you are interested in starting your own Connecticut child care business, then you will want to be aware of the following information. In the state of Connecticut, family child care homes, group day care homes, and child day care centers are required to be licensed. The Department of Public Health, Community Based Regulation Section is responsible for the administration of the licensing programs.

Providers of family child care homes may not care for more than 6 children, including the provider’s own children not in school full-time. This care must be provided for more than three hours, but less than 12 hours during a 24 hour period on a regular, recurring basis. However, this time period may be extended for a short-term overnight stay or a need for short-term extended care. Three additional children, who are in school full-time during the regular school year, are permitted as well. Group day care homes are defined as places of care in a private home in which care is provided for not less than 7, but not more than 12 related or unrelated children on a regular, recurring basis. Child day care centers provide care to more than 12 related or unrelated children at a facility outside of the home on a regular basis.

Regulations governing the child care centers and child care homes require that at least one staff member must obtain a First Aid certification from a Department approved course. A First Aid certified staff member must be on the premises during the operating hours at all times. Again, the certification must be from the Department approved list which can be found below. In addition, the First Aid course must be six hours in length and does not include the CPR portion of instruction. No online courses will be accepted.

Additional information has been listed for Connecticut child care and daycare providers looking to find out about CPR courses, child care associations, continuing education courses, and where to report child abuse. More resources will be continuously added, so check back often for updates. If you know of a valuable resource that you would like to shared, please contact me and I will be sure to add it to our master list.
