Hawaii Child Care Licensing Contact Information
The Hawaii child care licensing contact information page will provide valuable information if you are thinking of starting your own Hawaii child care business.
The Department of Human Services’ Child Care Licensing Division determines and enforces the minimum standards for the Hawaii Child Care Licensing Program. The licensing staff of the Department of Human Services’ Child Care Licensing Division monitors the compliance of these minimum standards and provides consultation and technical assistance to child care providers. They also ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children enrolled in licensed programs.
Child care that is conducted in a person’s home for 3 to 6 children is called Family Child Care. Registration is required for Family Child Care Homes. The registration is valid for 1 year for new applicants and for providers who have operated for less than 4 years. After a child care provider has been in operation for at least 4 years, a registration is valid for 2 years.
In order to register your home as a Family Child Care home, you must submit an application to the department. The applicant’s qualifications, home, and proposed operation will be assessed by the department and a criminal background check will be performed. The department will visit and inspect the premises at least once in each calendar year or upon receipt of a complaint. Anyone who operates a Family Child Care Home without the proper authorization will be subject to a fine.
Group Child Care centers and Group Child Care homes must obtain a Hawaii child care license in order to operate legally. A Group Child Care center is generally a preschool program that cares for children that are 2 years old and older. A Group Child Care Home is considered to be child care provided by an individual in a facility that may be an extended or modified family child care home that complies with county zoning requirements for 7 to 12 children.
The department will visit and inspect Group Child Care centers and Group Child Care Homes as often as necessary to ensure compliance. Visits and inspections will be made at least once annually. If a center or home is not in compliance, the Hawaii child care license can be revoked if corrections are not made.
Hawaii Child Care Licensing requirements state that every Group Child Care center and Group Child Care home must keep certain records available and must files these records with the Department of Human Services. All records concerning children or their parents or relatives shall be kept confidential by the provider and by members of any department.
Other programs that must have a Hawaii child care license are before school care, after school care, summer and intercession care which provide care for school-aged (4 years 8 months to 12 years old) children. Infant/Toddler Care programs must also be licensed in order to care for children who are aged 6 weeks to 36 months old.
