Child Care Licensing
Contact Information

The Idaho child care licensing contact information page will provide valuable information if you are thinking of starting your own Idaho child care business.

Regional Family and Children's Services, under the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, issue Idaho child care licenses. These licenses must be renewed every 2 years. It is a misdemeanor to operate a child care center without first obtaining an Idaho child care license or without posting the license in a conspicuous place.

There are 3 types of child care settings. The first is Family child care homes. Family child care homes care for 1 to 6 children and are not required to have an Idaho child care license. However, a provider of a Family child care home may choose to become licensed in order to participate in the federally funded food program. To apply as a child care provider for this type of setting, you will be responsible for paying for a criminal history check, health inspection and a fire inspection.

The second type of child care setting is called Group child care. Group child care providers care for 7 to 12 children and are required by state law to be certified. To apply for a group child care license, you will need to pay for a criminal history check, health inspection, and fire inspection. If you opt for the Group child care certification, you will need to pay for a criminal history check and fire inspection.

The third type of child care setting is Child care centers. These are required to obtain an Idaho child care license and typically enroll 13 or more children. To apply for a Basic Idaho child care center license, you will need to pay for a criminal history check, health inspection and fire inspection.

The fire inspection will check for fire and smoke alarms, a functional telephone, adequate fire extinguishers, and adequate exits. The fire safety standards determine the adult/child ratios. For children 18 months and younger, the ratio is 1:6. For children 18 months to 5 years, the ratio is 1:12. For children 5 years and older, the ratio is 1:18.

The health inspection will check for food preparation methods, food storage methods, sanitary diaper changing areas and methods, handwashing practices of staff and children, sanitary conditions of restrooms, nap areas, and play areas, storage practices of medicine and cleaning supplies, and availability of functional telephone.

There are currently 7 individual city governments that impose additional Idaho child care licensing requirements. If you live in one of these areas, check with your local City Clerk's office for additional licensing information, requirements, and local fees. Other cities may require you to have a business license or permits from the Planning and Zoning department, check with your local City Clerk's office.
