Iowa Child Care Licensing Contact Information
The Iowa child care licensing information page will provide valuable information if you are thinking of starting your own Iowa child care business.
Child Care Homes – Child care may be provided in homes in the state of Iowa. These homes may be registered or non-registered depending on the number of children that the child care provider provides care for. Non-registered child care providers may provide care for 5 or fewer children according to Iowa state law. Homes that are not registered are not regulated by the state of Iowa. If care will be provided for more than 5 children, then the child care provider must go through the process of registration to obtain a certificate.
The Iowa child care licensing rules define a “child” as being in child care and counted if:
- The child is an infant or preschool age of the provider and is being supervised by the provider in the child care home.
- The child is school age and is not the provider’s own child, and is not considered to have a developmental disability as defined under federal law, then the child is counted through age twelve.
- The child is a school age child with a developmental disability, that is not the provider's children, then the child is counted through age eighteen.
- The school age children of the provider are counted in the total number of children when they regularly stay home for home-schooling. However, the provider's school-age children are not counted during school breaks and days off of school when the provider's children regularly attend school.
Registered Child Development Homes - Any child care provider wishing to care for more than 5 children either related or unrelated must obtain a registration certificate to operate a child development home, according to Iowa child care licensing rules. Child development homes are divided into three categories: A, B, and C, based on the provider’s education and experience.
- Child Development Home A
- Child Development Home B
- Child Development Home C
