Child Development Home, Category A
In order to be a Iowa child development home A provider, you must be 18 years old and have 3 written references that attest to character and ability to provide child care. Care may be provided for up to 6 preschool children. However, of the 6 children, not more than 4 children may be 24 months of age or younger. Of those 4 children under 24 months of age, no more than 3 may be 18 months or younger.
The provider’s own preschool age children are included in the count, but the provider’s children that are attending kindergarten or higher are not included in the total count. No more than 2 children who attend school may be present for less than 2 hours at a time.
Child Development Home A providers may provide care to a maximum of 8 children on days when schools are closed due to emergencies such as inclement weather or physical plant failure, but not for non-emergency school closures such as inservice, teacher conference, or vacation days.
Category A child care providers must meet certain training requirements. Within the 1st 3 months: Two hours of approved child abuse and neglect mandatory reporter training and certification in infant and child first aid that includes management of a blocked airway and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.Within 1st year of registration: 12 hours training, 2 hours must be health and safety.
During the 2nd year and each subsequent year: 12 hours of training, of which 6 hours must be obtained from a sponsored group setting. For additional information, contact the DHS about approved training courses.
