Iowa Child Development Home B

Child Development Home, Category B
Iowa Child Development Home B providers must meet additional qualifications than Category A providers. Category B providers must be 20 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and must have either of the following:

  • Have two years experience as a non-registered or registered child care home provider.

  • Have a Child Development Associate credential or a two or four year college degree in a child care related field AND one year of experience as a non-registered or registered child care home provider.

Care may be provided for up to 6 preschool children. However, of the 6 children, not more than 4 children may be 24 months of age or younger. Of those 4 children under 24 months of age, no more than 3 may be 18 months or younger. The provider’s own preschool age children are included in the count, but the provider’s children that are attending kindergarten or higher are not included in the total count.
Iowa Child Development Home B and C providers are allowed to use part time hours when the number of children in care exceeds the allowable capacity. You can NEVER exceed the maximum number of children under 24 months of age in care. You may use a maximum of 180 hours of part time care per month, and must show proof of the number of part-time hours used.

Child Development Home B providers may provide care to a maximum of 12 children on days when schools are closed due to emergencies such as inclement weather or physical plant failure, but not for non-emergency school closures such as inservice, teacher conference, or vacation days. However, whenever more than 8 children are present at any one time for more than two hours, the provider must be assisted by a DHS-approved assistant aged 14 or older.

Category B child care providers must meet certain training requirements. Within the 1st 3 months: Two hours of approved child abuse and neglect mandatory reporter training and Certification in infant and child first aid that includes management of a blocked airway and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Within 1st year of registration: 12 hours training, 2 hours must be health and safety. During the 2nd year and each subsequent year: 12 hours of training, of which 6 hours must be obtained from a sponsored group setting. Additional information about training courses can be obtained by contacting the DHS.
