Iowa Child Development Home C

Child Development Home, Category C
Iowa Child Development Home C providers must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have five years experience as a non-registered or registered child care home provider.
  • Have a Child Development Associate credential or a two or four year college degree in a child care related field AND four years of experience as a non-registered or registered child care home provider.

Care may be provided for up to 12 preschool children at any one time. Whenever more than eight children are present, both providers, each meeting the individual qualifications for child development home registration as a Child Development Home C provider, must be present. Of these 12 children, not more than 4 children who are 24 months of age or younger may be in care. Whenever four children under the age of 18 months are in care, both providers must be present. The providers’ own preschool age children are included in the total count, but the providers’ own children attending kindergarten or a higher level are not included in the total count.

In addition to these 12 children, up to two children who attend school may be present for a period of less than two hours at any one time. Up to two children may also be present who are using part-time hours.

Iowa Child Development Home B and C providers are allowed to use part time hours when the number of children in care exceeds the allowable capacity. You can NEVER exceed the maximum number of children under 24 months of age in care. You may use a maximum of 180 hours of part time care per month, and must show proof of the number of part-time hours used.

Iowa Child Development Home C providers may provide care to a maximum of 16 children on days when schools are closed due to emergencies such as inclement weather or physical plant failure, but not for non-emergency school closures such as inservice, teacher conference, or vacation days. However, whenever more than 8 children are present at any one time for more than two hours, the provider must be assisted by a DHS-approved assistant aged 18 or older.

Category C child care providers must meet certain training requirements. Within the 1st 3 months: Two hours of approved child abuse and neglect mandatory reporter training and Certification in infant and child first aid that includes management of a blocked airway and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Within 1st year of registration: 12 hours training, 2 hours must be health and safety. During the 2nd year and each subsequent year: 12 hours of training, of which 6 hours must be in a sponsored group setting. Please contact the DHS for additional information about training courses.
